HollywoodNews.com: Fox’s comedy satire “Vampires Suck” succeeded in its first day of release, topping the charts with a hysterically good $4 million. The film was in play at 2,978 venues and even kicked Lionsgate’s No. 1 weekend film “The Expendables” to second place. The Sylvester Stallone actioner drew $3 million. “Vampires” was directed by Jason Friedberg and Aaron Seltzer, two comedic directors who have quickly built up their reputation as the millennium’s Zucker Brothers and Abrahams. David Zucker, Jerry Zucker and Jim Abrahams were known in the ‘80s for their spot-on cinema satires “Airplane!” and “The Naked Gun: From the Files of Police Squad.” “Vampires” is a straight-up knock on the “Twilight” series. Fox decided to get a leg up on the crowded weekend ahead by unspooling the film midweek, grabbing the attention of those kids still out on summer vacation. Friedberg and Seltzer’s previous releases include 2006’s “Date Movie” ($48.5 million), a send-up of romantic comedies; 2007’s “Epic Movie,” a satire of tentpole films ($39.7 million); 2008’s “Meet the Spartans,” ($38.2 million) a clownish take on “300” and 2008’s “Disaster Movie” ($14.2 million), a parody of horror films. There was some concern that a leaked copy of “Vampires” on the web would damage its ticket sales. Arguably, that’s hardly the case.
